The work of Antonio Sciortino has its imprint, either directly or indirectly, on the work of many Maltese artists. For example, Fuga by Giovanni Spiteri Sacco (1907–1996) – presently in the Malta Society of Arts permanent collection – is a clear attempt by that artist, a student of Sciortino, to capture some of the dynamic energy in Sciortino’s Velocità or Speed from 1937, even if he is possibly better known for his figurative works. Similarly, Tabone’s Go Go Go is her own interpretation of the same dynamic energy captured in Sciortino’s Speed.
This work was first created under the working title Żiffa and briefly exhibited through the Gabriel Caruana Foundation during their 2017 edition of the annual Buongiorno Ceramica in collaboration with Centro per l’Artigianato Artistico e Tradizionale della Toscana (artEX) and Associazione Italiana Città della Ceramica (AiCC): Art to Ware curated by Umberto Buttigieg. This was just a few days before the artist’s visit to China, as a guest of the China Cultural Centre. The generous hospitality offered visiting guests of the Ministry of Culture in China includes a sense of speed embedded in the whizzing about the best of a few days’ visit to a very large country with more sites of interest than anyone can fit into a few brief weeks.
On her return to Malta, this work was given the English language title Go Go Go and exhibited as part of the touring exhibition Inspired in China.
