Saffi is a series of works that to date consists of two works. However, it is very likely that other works will be augmented to this series in years to come. The layering of roughly hewn relatively large and thick pieces of transparent plexiglass moves the work from transparency to translucency and edges towards aspects of opacity.
When they were exhibited during Trasparenza in 2022 they made quite an impact because they were clear examples of how too much transparency can reduce clarity. The given title of Saffi (a Maltese word that has two meanings: the plural noun ‘layers’ and the imperative form of the verb ‘purify’) makes for a multiplicity of interpretations, where the theme of transparency and the multi-layered dimension of so many of Tabone’s body of works come together to be embodied in the works in this series.
